Unfortunately it happens all to often- over the years it has gotten much better but it still happens, especially in places like Louisiana. We saw this guy run through a low end livestock auction in LA and sell to a kill buyer- we contacted him and were able to buy Sy and another LA thoroughbred and bring them to safety here in MD.
Sy was noticeably upset and anxious in the auction ring and the feed lot- we were not sure what we were bringing home. After quarantine we brought him to our main farm. He was very shy and not wanting to be caught but after a few minutes of sweet talk, he let us catch him. He was worried coming into the barn but as we groomed him, cut the auction tags off, and trimmed his feet his eye changed and got soft. He stood beautifully in the aisle while we tacked him up, went out to the ring, stood at the block and went nicely both ways (see video.) This guy has a lot to offer- we think he could be a top level competitor in any sport.
Barefoot and sound, no vices, no known injuries or suspicious areas that we see. He did have published works in December 2024, so is eligible for the 2026 Makeover. We have no idea why he never ran, other than very slow works…..
